Mudjacking — also called slabjacking, slab jacking, or concrete raising — is the traditional method of lifting sunken concrete by pumping a cement-and-aggregate slurry beneath the slab. For decades, mudjacking has been the go-to fix for Knoxville driveways, sidewalks, and patios that have settled into the soft red clay common across East Tennessee.
Knoxville Concrete Lifting offers both modern polyurethane lifting and classic mudjacking, and we'll honestly recommend whichever method is right for your project, your soil, and your budget.
How Mudjacking Works
We drill 1"–2" injection holes through the sunken slab. A hydraulic pump forces a slurry of Portland cement, limestone, and water beneath the concrete. As the slurry fills the void, it generates upward pressure that lifts the slab back to grade. Holes are then patched with mortar.
Mudjacking has been used successfully in Knox County for more than 50 years. It remains an excellent solution for large, thick commercial slabs and projects where cost is the primary driver.
When Mudjacking Is the Right Choice
Mudjacking shines on thick driveways, garage floors, and commercial pads where the underlying soil is firm enough to support the added weight of the slurry. It's typically 20–30% cheaper than polyjacking on a per-square-foot basis.
If your slab has settled because the underlying soil itself is unstable — a common issue in Sevier County's karst terrain or Blount County's wetter low-lying neighborhoods — polyurethane lifting is usually a better long-term investment because the foam doesn't add weight to already-failing soil.
Mudjacking vs Polyjacking — Honest Comparison
Cost: Mudjacking is the budget-friendly option. Speed: polyjacking cures in 15 minutes, mudjacking in 24–48 hours. Hole size: mudjacking uses 1"–2" holes, polyurethane uses 5/8". Weight: mudjacking adds significant load, polyurethane does not. Lifespan: both can last decades, but polyurethane is more forgiving in unstable East Tennessee soils.
