Patios and pool decks are built to be flat or slightly sloped for drainage. When they start tilting the wrong way, water goes where it shouldn't: toward your foundation, into your basement, or against your pool shell. In Knoxville and East Tennessee, this is one of the most common reasons homeowners call us — and polyurethane concrete lifting is usually the fastest, most permanent fix.
Why Patios and Pool Decks Sink
Patios and pool decks are often built on backfill soil that was never compacted to the same standard as the original ground. Over time, that soil settles. Rain, irrigation, and roof runoff then wash fine particles out from under the slab, creating voids. The concrete follows the soil down.
In Sevier County and the Smoky Mountain foothills, we also see settlement caused by steeper grades, seasonal runoff, and soils that were disturbed during construction. Pool decks are especially vulnerable because they carry heavy water loads and are often built on fill that was brought in to create a flat building pad.
Common warning signs include:
- Patio tilting toward the house instead of away from it
- Water pooling in the center of the patio or against the foundation
- Pool deck dropping below the coping, creating a gap or stub-toe hazard
- Cracks radiating from the low spot
- Doors that stick or basement moisture after heavy rain
The Risk of Waiting
A sunken patio doesn't get better on its own. The soil keeps compressing, the voids keep growing, and the slab keeps tilting. Water that pools against your foundation can lead to basement leaks, mold, and foundation movement. A pool deck that drops away from the coping can damage the pool shell, plumbing, or tile.
The sooner you level the concrete, the less likely you are to need foundation waterproofing, pool repairs, or full deck replacement.
How Polyurethane Patio & Pool Deck Lifting Works
Polyurethane concrete lifting is ideal for patios and pool decks because it's precise, lightweight, and fast-curing. Here's what the process looks like:
- Inspection and measurement. We map the low spots, check drainage patterns, and identify any voids beneath the slab.
- Strategic injection. Small 5/8" ports are drilled in a pattern designed to lift the slab evenly without stressing the pool coping or adjacent structures.
- Foam expansion. High-density polyurethane foam expands beneath the concrete, filling voids and raising the deck to the correct grade.
- Patch and finish. Injection holes are patched with color-matched cement. The area is ready for use immediately.
Because the foam is waterproof, it won't wash out like mudjacking slurry can. Because it's lightweight, it won't add load to already-compromised soil. And because it cures in minutes, you don't lose days of pool or patio use.
Pool Deck Lifting: Special Considerations
Pool decks require more care than driveways. The deck is tied to the pool coping, and the shell itself can't tolerate uneven pressure. Our technicians lift pool decks in small, controlled increments, constantly checking the relationship between the deck and the coping.
We work around all pool types: vinyl liner, fiberglass, and gunite. We also protect plumbing lines, skimmers, and return jets by avoiding injection in sensitive areas. In most cases, the pool can stay full during the work.
Cost of Patio and Pool Deck Leveling in Knoxville
Every job at Knoxville Concrete Lifting starts at our $1,500 minimum. Most residential patio and pool deck lifts fall between $1,500 and $2,400. Larger decks, multi-section lifts, or decks with extensive voids can cost more. We always provide a flat-rate written quote before any work begins.
Compared to tear-out and replacement — which can easily run $10,000 or more for a pool deck — polyurethane lifting is a fraction of the cost and disruption.
When Replacement Makes More Sense
Lifting isn't right for every patio or pool deck. If the concrete is severely cracked, spalling, or structurally failing, replacement may be the better long-term option. During our free inspection, we'll tell you honestly whether lifting or replacement is the right choice for your specific situation.
